Since 2009, when child welfare figures showed Klamath County had twice the rate of child abuse as Oregon and the U.S., CARES has been working to prevent child abuse and neglect with innovative awareness, prevention, and education programs. The Period of PURPLE Crying is an evidence-based program that teaches new parents, healthcare professionals, and caregivers about child development, normal infant crying, and the long-term consequences of shaking a baby.  The program aims to help individuals understand the frustrating features of crying in normal, healthy infants that can lead to shaking or abuse. Teachers, coaches, school-based staff and volunteers are in a unique position to prevent and respond to child abuse and neglect. They often become the trusted adult students turn to in difficult times, opening a door for students to get the help they need.  Mandatory reporter training helps them recognize the signs and symptoms of abuse and to know when and how to report it.

Klamath Stop the Hurt was a five-year collaborative, award-winning campaign designed to increase awareness of child abuse, promote positive parenting, and offer resources for families to prevent abuse and neglect.
