Our Mission:
Klamath-Lake Child Abuse Response and Evaluation Services (CARES) is dedicated to providing safe, comprehensive, objective medical assessments, and to raising awareness about child abuse through coordinated, collaborative educational programs.

What We Do:
CARES strives to prevent the repeated abuse of children in Klamath and Lake Counties by offering the highest quality professional services with compassion and sensitivity. Our thorough, caring, approach and child-focused environment dramatically reduces the trauma young victims may have already endured. CARES always focuses on the best interest of the child.
  1. Medical examiners specially trained in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of child abuse conduct complete physical examinations to objectively determine if abuse has occurred.
  2. Highly trained interviewers gently talk with the child using established protocols. The interview is recorded and can be admissible as evidence in court if needed to reduce further trauma to the child.
  3. Our child and family advocate meets with the child and parents or guardians to evaluate their needs, refers them for additional services in the community, and follows up with them for 90 days.
To help prevent abuse from occurring, we offer community education and prevention programs:
  1. "Stop The Hurt," a collaborative community-wide campaign to increase awareness of child abuse, promote positive parenting, and offer resources for kids and families to prevent abuse and neglect.
  2. "Period of PURPLE Crying" teaches new parents, healthcare professionals and child caregivers about normal infant crying and how shaking a baby can cause blindness, brain injury or death.
  3. "Signs and Symptoms of Child Abuse" designed for teachers, counselors, health professionals and high-risk groups.
